Background of the Study
Sexual harassment in tertiary institutions is a pervasive issue affecting academic integrity, psychological well‐being, and overall campus culture. Over the past few years, researchers have noted that sexual harassment not only undermines the safety and dignity of individuals but also hinders the academic and professional progress of students and staff (Ogunleye, 2023; Adebayo, 2024). In Iwo Local Government Area, where traditional values intersect with modern educational aspirations, the challenge becomes more complex due to social stigma and inadequate reporting mechanisms. Recent studies conducted between 2023 and 2025 have indicated that many cases remain unreported, leading to an underestimation of the issue’s magnitude (Ibrahim, 2023). Institutions often lack comprehensive policies and robust support systems necessary for addressing harassment, which exacerbates feelings of vulnerability among victims (Okeke, 2025). The dynamic interplay of cultural, institutional, and legal factors has created an environment where perpetrators often escape accountability, leaving a lasting impact on the affected community. This study seeks to analyze these contributing factors and evaluate the effectiveness of current interventions. A critical examination of the institutional frameworks and social attitudes is expected to offer insights that could inform policy reforms and enhance preventive strategies (Eze, 2024). The comprehensive review of existing literature further substantiates the urgency of addressing this critical issue.
Statement of the Problem
Despite various policies aimed at preventing sexual harassment in tertiary institutions, the problem persists in Iwo Local Government Area due to underreporting, cultural barriers, and limited institutional accountability (Ogunleye, 2023). Recent research indicates that victims often hesitate to report incidents because of fear of stigmatization and potential retaliation (Adebayo, 2024). The lack of robust reporting mechanisms and supportive structures further compounds the issue (Ibrahim, 2023). This persistent problem raises concerns regarding the effectiveness of current policies, necessitating an in‐depth investigation into the institutional and social factors that contribute to the prevalence of sexual harassment (Okeke, 2025). These issues demand urgent attention to reshape parenting norms effectively now.
Objectives of the Study:
To examine the prevalence and forms of sexual harassment in tertiary institutions in Iwo.
To evaluate the effectiveness of existing institutional policies and support systems.
To propose recommendations for enhancing reporting mechanisms and preventive measures.
Research Questions:
What is the extent of sexual harassment incidents in tertiary institutions in Iwo?
How effective are the current institutional policies in addressing sexual harassment?
What improvements can be made to support victims and prevent future incidents?
Research Hypotheses:
There is a significant relationship between institutional policy effectiveness and the reporting rates of sexual harassment.
Students experiencing harassment are less likely to seek help due to cultural stigma.
Improved support systems lead to increased reporting and reduction in harassment incidents.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a comprehensive analysis of sexual harassment in tertiary institutions within Iwo, offering insights into policy gaps and cultural challenges. It aims to inform institutional reforms, enhance victim support systems, and promote safer academic environments. Findings will contribute to academic literature and guide policymakers in implementing effective strategies for reducing harassment.
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.
Definitions of Terms:
Sexual Harassment: Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature.
Tertiary Institutions: Institutions providing post-secondary education including universities and colleges.
